Abduction Update

Required Reading for Angry Abductees

So I just reread Sherman Alexie's Indian Killer, and it was kind of strange to realize how much it helped reinforce my thinking about transracial abduction the first time I read it. I didn't feel, like, so bad about being critical of my white parents after reading this.

The main character is a Native American guy whose abductive name is John Smith. He doesn't know what tribe he is, or really anything else about his history. The opening chapter, titled "Mythology," describes John's fourteen-year-old mother giving birth to baby John at an Indian Health Service hospital. Immediately after she gives birth, the baby is whisked away from her and transported by helicopter to the home of Daniel and Olivia Smith, a well-to-do white couple who decided the waiting list for white babies was too long. The transporter guy jumps out of the helicopter and hands the baby over. Olivia starts to breastfeed John, who discovers that she has no milk, and the transporter guy snaps a picture of Daniel, Olivia, and John all together like that. A lot of the story is about John growing up and dealing with his white parents, who live in Bellevue, Washington, and are typical clueless, "nice" abductors.

Okay, so this is just my boring summary, but hopefully you get the idea, and you should read the actual book 'cuz it's pretty good. The only thing that bothered me is the ending. I don't want to give it away or whatever, but I'll just say that it kind of sucks how John ends up. I think it reflects the reality of the situation for a lot of abductees, but it could also send the message that there's no hope for abductees once whites get their hands on us. I don't like to believe that all abductees are just screwed for life, you know?
